September 2023 Update (part 1)

Hey! "August part 2" never made an appearance, so here is another part 1 to make up for it! Over the past month, the rest of the overworld graphics rehaul was completed. This took much longer than I was hoping - deciding on updated screen layouts while also creating the artwork and trying to iterate on both at the same time was taxing and motivation took a hit. I'm happy with the overall result but also happy to be moving on! Screenshots of the new designs are below.

Screen 1: Valley Entrance

Screen 2: Thief's Home

Screen 3: Phone Booth

Screen 4: Library Teleporter

And for vague comparison, this is what the old overworld used to look like:

The fun new things on the overworld rehaul are:

  • Wind-affected cable physics
  • Parallax layers (foreground and background)
  • Lots more to climb on
  • Less "dead space" between areas
  • 🐸 F r o g s 🐸
  • Different palettes per screen for a more colourful feel
  • Arrow helpers to guide players
  • Dripping stalactites in caves

And the things that haven't made it in yet, but are still on the to do list:

  • Normal owl, small animation (blink, turn to face thief)
  • Splash particles when thief lands in water
  • Ambient sounds (running water, wind and rustling bushes, frogs, echoey caves)

That's all the progress for the past month! Moving back to some programming work (phew). As always, shorter updates can be found on Twitter: https://twitter.com/splopp/status/1575042989269061634

Thanks, see you in the next one!
